| The Process (Continued) B. Prepare the Stock Most dings and nicks can be removed fairly easily with a process I have painstakingly developed over the years using a combination of hand tools and sanding. Deep or large nicks and scratches can be much harder to remove. I will work with them as much as possible and will use a wood filler if necessary, but it will always show. I have developed a way to make it less obvious but it will still show some. Sometimes you may wish to leave these marks in order to preserve the natural history of the rifle. C. Sanding Process I will employ the use of several types of sandpaper depending upon the condition of the stock once the finish has been removed. Sandpaper grit can range from as low as 80 grit up through 800 grit, as I deem appropriate for the individual rifle and stock condition. D. Refinishing the Stock When the stock is completeely ready, and not before, I will apply the stain. You have the option of choosing which type stain you prefer. Once the stain has hardened, three coats of tung oil will be applied in either low or high gloss depending on your preference. Or, you may choose to use a linseed oil if you would prefer that finish instead. The linseed takes a little longer because you have to dry it six or seven days after each dipping. I will dip it twice here but of course, with linseed oil, over time you will need to dip it again in order to preserve the wood. E. I Do Not Blue Guns. |
